First Aid For Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke

Sweat evaporates from the skin to cool the body. If this personal cooling system does not work right or fails to work, heat exhaustion or a heat stroke can occur.

Heat exhaustion is a warning that the body is getting too hot. With a heat stroke, body organs start to overheat. They will stop working if they get hot enough. If it is not treated, a heat stroke can result in death.

Signs & Symptoms For a Heat Stroke

These signs and symptoms can occur suddenly with little warning:

Very high temperature (104ºF or higher).
Hot, dry, red skin. No sweating.
Deep breathing and fast pulse. Then shallow breathing and weak pulse.
Confusion. Hallucinations.
Convulsions.
Loss of consciousness.

For Heat Exhaustion
Normal, low, or only slightly elevated body temperature.
Cool, clammy, pale skin. Sweating.
Dry mouth. Thirst.
Fatigue. Weakness. Feeling dizzy.
Headache.
Nausea. Vomiting can occur.
Muscle cramps.
Weak or rapid pulse.

Causes
Anything that keeps the body's natural cooling system from working right can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. This includes:

Extreme heat and humidity.
Being in places without fans or air conditioners during hot, humid weather.
Not being able to get to public air-conditioned places. Waiting for a bus or other type of public transportation in hot, humid weather.
Overdressing.
Changes in the skin due to aging.
Poor circulation. Heart, lung, and/or kidney disease.
Not being able to sweat due to medicines, such as water pills and some used for mental illnesses.
Alcohol or drug use.
Any illness that causes weakness, fever, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Treatment

A heat stroke is a medical emergency. Heat exhaustion may respond to self-care measures. If not, medical care is needed.

Before Emergency Care Arrives

Move the person to a cool place indoors or under a shady tree. Place the feet higher than the head to avoid shock.
Remove clothing. Either wrap the person in a cold, wet sheet; sponge the person with towels or sheets that are soaked in cold water; or spray the person with cool water. Fan the person.
Put ice packs or cold compresses on the neck, under the armpits, and on the groin area.
Once the person's temperature gets to 101ºF, place him or her in the Recovery Position. Do not lower the temperature further.

Don't give fever reducing medicine.
Don't use rubbing alcohol.

First Aid for Heat Exhaustion

Move to a cool place indoors or in the shade. Lie down.
Loosen clothing.
Drink fluids, such as cool or cold water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 1 quart of water. Sip this. Or, drink sport drinks, such as Gatorade, etc.
Have salty foods, such as saltine crackers, if you tolerate them.
Massage and stretch cramped muscles.

Prevention

Drink lots of liquids, especially if your urine is dark yellow. Drink water, sport drinks, such as Gatorade, etc.
Do not stay in or leave anyone in a closed, parked car during hot weather.
Don't have drinks with alcohol or caffeine.
Use caution when you are in the sun. At the first sign of heat exhaustion, get out of the sun. If you can, avoid midday heat. Do not do vigorous activity during the hottest part of the day (11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, such as cotton, so sweat can evaporate. Wear a wide-brimmed hat with vents. Use an umbrella for shade.
If you feel very hot, try to cool off. Open a window. Use a fan. Go to an air-conditioned place.
Check with your doctor about sun exposure if you take:
Water pills.
Mood-altering medicines.
Some antibiotics, such as tetracycline.

Heatstroke First Aid

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Heatstroke is the most severe of heat-related problems, after heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Heatstroke often results from exercise or heavy work in hot environments combined with inadequate fluid intake.

Young children, older adults, people who are obese and people born with an impaired ability to sweat are at high risk of heatstroke. Other risk factors include dehydration, alcohol use, cardiovascular disease and certain medications.

What makes heatstroke severe and potentially life-threatening is that the body's normal mechanisms for dealing with heat stress, such as sweating and temperature control, become inadequate. The main sign of heatstroke is a markedly elevated body temperature — generally greater than 104 F (40 C) — with changes in mental status ranging from personality changes to confusion and coma. Skin may be hot and dry — although if heatstroke is caused by exertion, the skin may be moist.

Other signs and symptoms may include

Rapid heartbeat
Rapid and shallow breathing
Elevated or lowered blood pressure
Cessation of sweating
Irritability, confusion or unconsciousness
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
Headache
Nausea
Fainting, which may be the first sign in older adults

If you suspect heatstroke

Move the person out of the sun and into a shady or air-conditioned space.
Call 911 or emergency medical help.
Cool the person by covering with damp sheets or by spraying with cool water. Direct air onto the person with a fan or newspaper.
Have the person drink cool water or other nonalcoholic beverage without caffeine, if he or she is able.

Best healthy summer foods

Fashion, Beauty and Health

It’s summer—that amazing time of year when fresh produce abounds. As a dietitian and nutrition editor I love that there’s an abundance of fresh, delicious and healthy choices. Better yet: many of summer’s fruits and vegetables are brimming with secret health benefits. Here are some of my favorites and why they’re a particularly good choice in the summer—as reported on in EatingWell Magazine:

1. Corn:
Nothing says summer like fresh sweet corn. And did you know that two antioxidants—lutein and zeaxanthin—in corn may act like natural sunglasses, helping to form macular pigment that filters out some of the sun’s damaging rays? It’s true. The same antioxidants may also help lower your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration—the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60 (though much of the damage occurs decades earlier).
                                                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Iced coffee:
An iced pick-me-up is a great way to start your summer mornings. Better yet: drinking a single cup of coffee daily may lower your risk of developing skin cancer. In one study of more than 93,000 women, published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, those who drank one cup of caffeinated coffee a day reduced their risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer by about 10 percent. And the more they drank—up to about 6 cups or so per day—the lower their risk. Decaf didn’t seem to offer the same protection.

                                                     --------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Tart cherries:
They deliver a host of health benefits. You may have heard that drinking tart cherry juice can help you get a better night’s sleep and quell post-workout pain (read more about that here). But did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you slim down and get leaner? When scientists at the University of Michigan Health System put rats on a high-fat diet supplemented with either a tart-cherry powder (equal to 1% of the weight of their total diet) or the same number of calories from carbohydrate, those that got the cherry powder gained less weight and body fat. Why? The anthocyanins in tart cherries activate a molecule that helps rev up fat burning and decrease fat storage.
                                    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Tomatoes:
 There’s no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defense against the blazing summer sun. But eating tomatoes could give you a little extra protection: consuming more lycopene—the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red—may protect your skin from sunburn. In one study, participants who were exposed to UV light had almost 50 percent less skin reddening after they ate 2½ tablespoons of tomato paste (or drank about 1⅔ cups of carrot juice daily), in addition to their regular diet, for 10 to 12 weeks. Supplements, however, weren’t as effective: in the same study, those who received a lycopene supplement or synthetic lycopene weren’t significantly protected against sunburn.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Watermelon:
Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool (by sweating) during hot summer months. The good news is that you don’t just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: in addition to delivering skin-protecting lycopene, watermelon is 92 percent water (hence the name). Another boon? Research shows that eating foods that are full of water helps keep you satisfied on fewer calories. (Interestingly enough, drinking water alongside foods doesn’t have the same effect.)

                                                       ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Raspberries:
Raspberries are a great source of fiber—some of it soluble in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol. One cup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber—and a study in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that eating more fiber may help prevent weight gain or even promote weight loss. Over the course of a two-year study, researchers found that when study participants boosted their fiber by 8 grams for every 1,000 calories, they lost about 4½ pounds. Try it for yourself. If you’re consuming 2,000 calories per day, aim to increase your fiber by 16 grams. Find 5 more fiber–rich summer foods that do the weight–loss work for you here.

                                               --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. Iced tea:
Sure, a tall glass of iced tea on a hot day is refreshing, but did you know it might also do your body good? Studies show if you drink tea regularly, you may lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and diabetes, plus have healthier teeth and gums and stronger bones. How? Tea is rich in a class of antioxidants called flavonoids. Regardless of the variety—black, green, oolong, white or herbal—maximize the power of tea’s flavonoids by drinking it freshly brewed. If you want to keep a batch of cold tea in your refrigerator, “add a little lemon juice,” recommends Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. The citric acid and vitamin C in that squeeze of lemon—or lime, or orange—help preserve the flavonoids.
                                                     ------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Blueberries:
 Fresh blueberries straight from the berry patch are a special treat! Turns out the antioxidants in them may help ward off muscle fatigue by mopping up the additional free radicals that muscles produce during exercise, according to recent research out of New Zealand.

A healthy summer diet

Fashion, Beauty and Health

1. Water is the best option to quench thirst.

It is a key ingredient in keeping the body cool. With high humidity levels, sweat will not evaporate quickly. This prevents the body from releasing heat in an efficient manner. This is why it is necessary to hydrate and drink water, even when you are not thirsty. Increase water intake regardless of your activity levels.

2. Avoid caffinated or carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages, and those high in sugar.

All these drinks contain preservatives, colours and sugars. They are acidic in nature and act as diuretics. They cause loss of fluids through urine.

Many soft drinks contain diluted phosphoric acid, which damages the inner lining of the digestive tract and, therefore, affects its functions.

An excessive intake of soft drinks increases phosphorous levels in the blood. This separates calcium from the bones and moves it into the blood.

This calcium displacement from the bones makes them porous and brittle. It also causes plaque on the teeth, kidney stones, arthritis and bone spur.

Soft drinks also reduce mineral levels in the body to such an extent that enzymes are unable to function well, resulting in indigestion.

3. Do not drink very chilled liquids.

They do not really help cool you down in summers, though they make you cool for some time. Drinking really cold liquids when feeling hot may lead to a slight constriction of the blood vessels in the skin and decrease heat loss, which is not advisable when trying to cool down.

4. Limit all strenuous activity.

5. Eat light, nutritious and non-fatty meals.

6. Reduce intake of heaty vegetables and fruits, like spinach, radish, hot peppers, onions, garlic, beetroot, pineapple, grapefruit and ripe mangoes (if you cannot resist mangoes, soak them overnight in water).

7. Minimise the intake of dried fruits. Increase the intake of fresh fruit.

8. Use sabza (tulsi seeds) in your drinks -- this has very cooling effect on the body.

9. Include lots of fruits and vegetables in the form of salads and fresh juices, preferably without sugar, in your diet.

10. Drink lemon juice, coconut water and thin buttermilk, to replenish the fluids that are lost in sweat.

11. Avoid sugary foods, especially honey and molasses, and stick to natural sugars available from fruits and veggies.

12. Minimise the intake of hot, spicy foods and extremely salty foods. The body retains salt in the organic form found in fruits and veggies; the inorganic salt, meanwhile, is digested and needs to be thrown out of the body. And this is why you need to drink water!

13. Cut the intake of fried foods, like vadas, samosas, chips, bhajias, farsans, etc. Fat has a thermal effect.

14. Maintain good hygiene levels

Since the sultry heat of summer increases with each degree rise in the mercury, by rooting ourselves to nature's provision of healthful food choices we can experience the bloom of our health and vitality.

Diet Tips for Best Summer Body

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Diet Tips for Your Best Summer Body

After months of hiding from the winter's cold under the protective warmth of bulky clothes, it's time to start concentrating on eating healthy with the goal of getting that great summer body. Diet isn't everything though. Exercising is also an important component as you try to get in shape, but what you eat will ultimately have more influence over your figure. Here are some diet tips to help you obtain that beach body by the time summer completely rolls around.

Tip 1: Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
Filling your diet with fresh, nutritious, and low-calorie foods is the best way to begin transforming your body. Fruits and vegetables both fit the bill. Eating 3-5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily is recommended. Focus your dieting efforts on trying to eat plenty of the right foods, not just trying to avoid your favorite treats. This kind of mentality will aid you in obtaining your ideal summer body. When the afternoon rolls around and you need a snack, reach for an apple or some baby carrots instead of a cookie! Don't think of it as having to avoid the treat, think of it as having to fill your daily fruit and vegetable quota.

Tip 2: Eat a High-Fiber Lunch
No more empty calories! You'll be much less prone to snack if you eat a lunch that is filled with fiber. A bowl of chili with a portion of pita bread makes for an excellent high fiber lunch (bonus: it's also low in calories). Eat a lunch full of fiber and you'll be amazed at how many hours you can go without a snack.

 Tip 3: Cut Back on Sweets
Let's face it: you can't expect to transform you body when you're consuming lots of processed foods and refined sugars. You need to cut back significantly if you want real results. That's not to say that you can't still enjoy the occasional treat--it just needs to be done in moderation. There are a couple of ways to cut back. One way is to enjoy something small every day, like a few small pieces of dark chocolate or a measured cup of low fat ice cream. You won't feel deprived if you still treat yourself every day. The other way is to wait to enjoy one large treat every week, like a shared dessert at a restaurant, if you'd prefer quality over quantity.

Tip 4: Count Your Calories
The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you're taking in. Based on your age, weight, height and activity level an online calorie calculator will estimate how many calories you need to maintain or lose weight. Start keeping a food journal to keep track of every bite you take. You can modify your diet based upon what you write down.

Combine these diet tips with a regular exercise regimen and you can expect to obtain your best summer body sooner rather than later.

Treating Sunstroke/heatstroke

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Definition

Heatstroke is caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures or by doing physical activity in hot weather. You are considered to have heatstroke when your body temperature reaches 104 F (40 C) or higher. High humidity, certain health problems and some medications increase your risk of heatstroke. So does being a young child or older adult.
Heatstroke is the progression of two worsening heat-related conditions. When your body overheats, you first may develop heat cramps. If you don't cool down, you may progress to symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as heavy sweating, nausea, lightheadedness and feeling faint.
Heatstroke occurs if your body temperature continues to rise. At this point, emergency treatment is needed. In a period of hours, untreated heatstroke can cause damage to your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. These injuries get worse the longer treatment is delayed, increasing your risk of serious complications or death.

It is essential to identify the signs and symptoms of heat stroke or sunstroke as it can be a life-threatening condition. This article will give you more information on causes, symptoms and treatment of it in detail.

Sunstroke is a condition that develops when the body cannot control the temperature of the body. It occurs when the body is exposed to excess heat. Although the symptoms are same, sunstroke is more severe than heatstroke and often, considered as a life-threatening condition.

Causes of Sunstroke
The human body comprises a thermostat that regulates the temperature variations by controlling the supply of heat. Sometimes, when the body is exposed to excess heat, the body's cooling system fails. Therefore, exposure to excess temperature, heat, sun, is the most significant cause of sunstroke. Secondly, excess dehydration also results in sunstroke. Dehydration is a condition that arises due to loss of fluids caused due to excess urination or perspiration. If a person does not drink adequate amounts of water, when suffering from dehydration, the body takes up water from the bloodstream. This affects the functioning of the heat-regulating system as well as that of the heart. One should remember that merely sitting in the scorching sun for a long time, without drinking adequate amounts of water, can also lead to sunstroke.

Symptoms of Sunstroke
Mild sunstroke symptoms include dry, red and scaly skin due to loss of water from the body. Excessive perspiration is also one of the major symptoms. However, one should note that excessive perspiration leads to dehydration, and once the body is excessively dehydrated, the perspiration stops.
Dizziness
Headache
Rapid pulse rate
High fever
Rise in body temperature
Unconsciousness
Nausea
Hallucinations
Convulsions
Sometimes, sunburn is also observed along with the aforementioned symptoms. On the other hand, urine color may also darken due to excess dehydration. It is also observed that children and older people are more prone to sunstroke, than young adults.

Treating Sunstroke
Lowering the body temperature is the primary treatment of sunstroke. The patient is asked to have a bath with cool water or is covered in cool towels to lower the temperature. Ice packs are also used for the same purpose. Secondly, it is essential to treat dehydration by drinking water or electrolytic fluids. In case of severe dehydration, intravenous (IV) fluids may be required. Once the temperature is lowered and dehydration is treated, the doctor may prescribe medications to treat the other sunstroke and heatstroke symptoms.

This condition can be avoided by following simple preventive measures. Firstly, you should avoid being exposed to excessive heat. Secondly, it is essential to drink lots of water at regular intervals in summer (even when one does not feel thirsty) in order to keep the body hydrated. Lastly, it is necessary to wear clothing suitable for summer, and also avoid excess physical activity in the heat to prevent sunstroke.

How to Avoid Sunstroke

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Heat Stroke

What is Heat Stroke?

Heat Stroke is defined as the failure of the body to maintain a normal temperature after prolonged exposure to intense heat or excessive exertion. If you have conditions that predispose you to heat stroke such as an unconditioned athlete doing exhausting exercise, advanced age, diabetes,or other chronic medical conditions, you are at higher risk of repeated heat stroke if you are exposed to extreme heat. If you cover the victim with ice, he/she may shiver and end up producing more body heat causing the heat stroke to worsen.

Sun Stroke - Precautions

With the temperatures soaring day by day people need to be very alert and take all precautionary majors if they happen to go out in scorching heat.In India the mercury will start to rise from march and reaches its peak till may month. Marketing / Sales executives need to face tough time to promote their products in scorching heat. People from other fields also must ensure that they are not exposed much to heat to avoid sunstroke.

Causes

* Exposure to intense heat

* Strenuous Physical Activity

* Predisposing factors which hinder the body’s ability to release heat young children elderly people (over 65years) chronic illness, some medications

Prevention:

* Avoid prolonged exposure to intense heat

* Drink plenty of clean, cool water

* Apply a Cool wet Towel to your skin frequently

* Avoid exhausting activity if your body is not well conditioned.

* Visit the doctor regularly to monitor and control any chronic diseases

Call emergency Ambulance service if?

There is hot flushed skin with

* Decreased amount or lack of sweat

* Elevated body temperature

* Deep, rapid breathing

* Nausea and vomiting

* Decreased urine output

* Intense thirst

* Confusion

* Dizziness

* Blurred Vision

* Fits

Things to do before ambulance arrives

The objective is to reduce the body temperature by doing the following

* Remove the victims clothing and expose the skin to air

* Shift the victim to a cool shelter

* Spray the body with cold water

* Fan the body

* Apply the ice bags to the arm pits

Things you should avoid

* Do not cool the victim’s body too rapidly

* Do not give the victim water if he / she is un responsive

* Do not submerge the victim in ice water

* Do not give any medication

* Donot allow the victim to be re-exposed to the heat during recovery time

* Do not massage the muscles

How to Avoid Sunstroke

Sunstroke can be avoided by following and taking a few easy steps to prevent it. Proper prevention will help you avoid sunstroke, which is very serious and life threatening. One important factor to consider whenever ll be outdoors for an extended period of time under the sun is to protect your eyes from the rays of the sun by wearing sunglasses and a wide brim hat.

Keep the rays of the sun far away from your skin when taking a stroll during a hot summer day. Make sure to wear a hat or walk with a light umbrella, wearing light protective clothing.

Make sure to go out in the early part of the day if you want to enjoy the solitude and relaxation while sitting and watching the ocean waves as this is when the sun has not reached its peak. If you prefer late in the afternoon, make sure it is the time when the sun is setting. Take along a lightweight umbrella, a bottle of water, and enjoy the peacefulness and quietness, broken only by your thoughts, without worrying about the rays of the sun beating down on your body.

Use a body size umbrella to completely shade you when it is necessary to remain outdoors for a long period of time. Setting up a table to display your wares at an art show, or casual dining outdoors in the heat of the day, will ensure you the rays of the sun will be prevented from beating directly down on your body preventing dehydration and sunstroke.

Limit vigorous activity during hot or humid weather, especially during the middle of the day. Try to schedule exercise during cooler morning or evening hours. Rest under the shade for about 10 minutes every 1/2 hour so as not to get exhausted. Drink plenty of water frequently, not just sips and not just when you feel thirsty.

Rent a cabana or an umbrella when you want to spend the day at the beach without worrying of the sun's rays beating directly down on you. This will not only ensure your comfort, but will keep you safe from the rays of the sun and keep you cool. Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages and eat light meals. Drink plenty of water or water-based drinks, and enjoy your day out at the beach. Make sure you wear a wide brimmed hat, and do not forget the eyeglasses. A few precautions will ensure you a great day out, and keep you safe from getting sunstroke.

Importance of Yoga In Daily Life

Benefits of Exercise for Bones

Fashion, Beauty and Health

Regular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress.
Regular exercise also helps increase balance and coordination and reduces the risk of falls and subsequent fractures. Posture exercises can help prevent or reduce the slumping posture often associated with osteoporosis.
Exercise is critical for strong muscles and bones. Muscle strength declines as people age, but when people exercise they are stronger and leaner than others in their age group. Exercise also helps kids lower their risk of chronic pain in the future.
Exercise has been shown to increase bone strength, as measured by bone mineral density (BMD), in people of all age groups. The degree to which bone strength improves, however, is dependent on a variety of factors, including age, reproductive hormone status, nutritional status, and the nature of the exercise.

Benefits of regular exercise:
slows the loss of muscle mass
strengthens bones
reduces joint and muscle pain
relieves joint stiffness
improves mobility and balance

Be Careful:-
If you have a health condition or are new to exercise, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
Even if you start exercising late in life, you can still build strong, healthy bones, which are essential for avoiding injury and in preventing osteoporosis. It is never too late to start exercising to strengthen your bones, because even late in life bone density has been shown to be increased by weight-bearing exercises. Osteoporosis is caused through low bone mass, which makes bones brittle and easy to fracture.
